TOUAREG ROCKERS
For years I'm traveling in the Sahara region.
On my road I've met some "Ishumars", Touareg Rockers such as Tinariwen, Terakaft, Tamikrest, Bombino and many other bands.
We became friends and now we share fires, music and tears. In the Sahel, Sahara, but also when they come to Europe.
In their songs they celebrate the link between their desertic nature, old poetry, tamashek culture, and of course women, whose role is essential in touareg society. Some texts may seem as call for rebellion, but mainly those are calls for a self consciousness of their people, of their identity.
In Europe, the touareg diaspora tries to keep alive the friendly link between Sahara and Western world, organizing concerts and parties.
Those photos are part of a long documentary project I'm finishing about saharan contemporary culture, Touareg rockers, their public, their life, in an harsh environment, but with sweet music.
